The “Gig” is the weekly email from Covenant Presbyterian Women’s Ministry, connecting women to Jesus, women to women, and women to needs.
My dear, 93-year-old mother-in-law called us from Louisiana at the beginning of 2024 and said the breast cancer she had beaten years before had returned and was now in her lungs. Margie said, “I will die from this, but I have had a good long life. I’m at peace with it.” My husband Keller is one of five children–what a hard phone call to make five times!
We thought we were going to lose her last May as she had liters of fluid built up in her lungs and had to have it drained (over and over again). She could barely breathe. All her children, their spouses and her 18 grandchildren said their goodbyes.
Miraculously, she got off oxygen, pulled through and went back to driving and her regular activities, including attending her church and Bible study! After this amazing recovery in May, she told me that she knew God gave her more time on earth so that she could tell more folks about Jesus. And she did just that.
Margie didn’t go around preaching to people: she lived out the gospel everyday by the way she lived her life, the fruit she possessed, the way she loved and served God and others. She prayed faithfully daily for each person in her family and for those on her prayer list.
In December, she quickly became ill again. She was slipping in and out of consciousness and asked what day it was. One of her grandchildren answered, “It’s December 11th, Gammy.” She replied in a childlike way: “It’s a very special day!” Later that evening she met Jesus face to face, and it indeed was a very special day!
As we focused on missions and prayer last month, I was reminded of my good and faithful mother-in-law. May each of us tell others the good news of Jesus and may we faithfully pray for our church and others!
